Community Survivorship Workshops Kick off in January

Beginning January 18th, we'll be offering monthly workshops to community cancer survivors on topics selected by our patients and staff. Sessions run two hours and are open to anyone. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. Here's the line-up:

January 18th: Introduction to Cancer Survivorship; Exercise after a Cancer Diagnosis; Nutrition
February 15th: Estate Planning; Living Wills & Durable Power of Attorney
March 15th: Stress Management; Spirituality
April 19th: Social Security & Disability
May 17th: Caregivers & Relationship with Others; Chaplain Address
June 7th: Open Forum

At each workshop we'll collect questions for discussion at the open forum that will wrap up the six sessions. The open forum will consist of a panel of experts to answer questions, with representatives from medical oncology, radiation oncology, social work, chaplaincy, nursing, legal, and other invested disciplines.

One of our big projects is putting together a survivorship program kit for distribution to our regional cancer centers. Our target date for completion is July 2010. The kit will contain the essential elements for implementing a survivorship program at a community cancer center. We hope to include the Powerpoint presentations from all of the workshops, because we believe that educating survivors in the community is an important component of any survivorship program.
